Your Questions, Answered

  • Developmental editing focuses on the big picture of your manuscript.

I look at structure, pacing, character arcs, stakes, and scene purpose — how your story functions as a whole.

In the sequence of editing, this is the first step to take that solidifies your foundation. Next comes, line editing, copy editing and proofreading.

It’s not about grammar or polishing sentences. It’s about making sure the foundation of your story is strong before moving on to smaller details.

  • After you’ve completed a full draft.

You don’t need perfection. But you do need a complete manuscript so I can evaluate the entire arc — beginning, middle, and end.

Developmental editing works best before line editing or proofreading. There’s no point refining sentences if the structure underneath still needs clarity.

  • Turnaround time depends on your manuscript’s word count and my current schedule.

    On average:

    • 30,000 words: approximately 3–4 weeks

    • 50,000–70,000 words: approximately 4–6 weeks

However, I am often booked several months in advance.

If you’re working toward a specific deadline — whether querying agents or preparing for self-publication — I strongly recommend reaching out early to secure your slot.

Once your booking is confirmed, you’ll receive a clear start date and delivery timeline.

  • Yes — and you won’t be left alone with a document full of comments.

Your package includes a post-edit call.

After you receive your editorial report and annotated manuscript, I recommend taking a few days to sit with the feedback. Big-picture edits take time to process.

Once you’ve had space to read through everything, we schedule a call where you can:

    • Ask questions

    • Clarify structural feedback

    • Talk through revision priorities

    • Get guidance on your next steps

Developmental editing is not just about receiving notes. It’s about understanding them — and moving forward with confidence.

  • Send the complete draft you currently have.

It doesn’t need to be perfect. But it should be a full manuscript — not missing major sections.

If you’re unsure whether your draft is ready, you’re welcome to reach out and ask.

  • You are always in control of your story.

My feedback is based on my experience, training, and professional understanding of story structure, pacing, and character development. I offer strategic suggestions and explain the reasoning behind them.

But they are suggestions — not mandates.

It is completely okay to question, adapt, or even choose not to follow certain recommendations. The final decision is always yours.

My role is to provide perspective and clarity. Your role is to decide what aligns with your vision.

And if something doesn’t resonate, we can talk it through during your post-edit call.

  • Developmental editing is priced at $0.022 per word.

    This includes:

    • A full manuscript evaluation

    • A detailed editorial letter

    • Inline comments + side-bar suggestions

    • A post-edit consultation call

Your investment reflects focused, big-picture analysis and structured revision guidance — not surface-level edits.

Details are provided in your project agreement once we confirm your booking.

  • Many authors choose to return for a second round after completing their revisions.

Once you’ve worked through the first round of feedback and rewritten or restructured your manuscript, you’re welcome to reach out again.

Simply send an email when you’re ready, and I’ll share:

    • My current availability

    • Timeline options

    • Updated pricing based on your revised word count

Each round is booked separately to ensure your manuscript receives focused attention at the stage it’s in.

You’re never locked into multiple rounds — but you’re always welcome back when you’re ready.

  • Yes.

To secure your editing slot, the payment structure is as follows:

    • 20% at the time of booking (to reserve your spot)

    • 30% when the manuscript is submitted

    • 50% before the final delivery of your edit

This structure ensures your slot is protected and allows me to dedicate focused time to your manuscript.

Your editing slot is reserved exclusively for you. To maintain fairness and scheduling integrity, any rescheduling requests must be made at least two weeks prior to your start date.

  • You will receive:

    • A detailed editorial letter outlining strengths, structural concerns, pacing notes, and character development insights and much more

    • Inline comments throughout your manuscript

    • Clear guidance on what to prioritize in revision

You’ll know what’s working, what needs strengthening, and where to focus first.

  • There are different levels of editing, and each serves a specific purpose.

Developmental editing focuses on the big picture — structure, pacing, character arcs, stakes, and overall story cohesion. It examines whether your manuscript works as a complete narrative.

Line editing focuses on sentence flow, clarity, tone, and style.

Copyediting and proofreading address grammar, consistency, and technical correctness.

    The key difference is this:

Developmental editing looks at the foundation.

Other edits refine what’s built on top of that foundation.

If structural issues exist — such as unclear character motivation, weak stakes, or a sagging middle — polishing sentences won’t solve them.

That’s why developmental editing comes first.

It ensures your story holds together before you invest time and money in sentence-level refinement.

Once the structure is solid, smaller edits become far more effective — and far more meaningful.
